Description

Experience the pinnacle of hearing protection and clarity with the ER20XS Triple Flange Earplugs. Engineered with three points of contact, these earplugs form an exceptional seal in the ear canal, delivering superior noise reduction and sound fidelity compared to single dome silicone tips.

The ER20XS earplugs boast a low-profile, stem-less design that fits snugly in the outer ear without protruding, making them discreet and ideal for use under hats, helmets, and other headgear. The ergonomic triple flange tips ensure a secure, comfortable fit for extended wear, while the small, flexible pull tab allows for easy removal. They also come with an easy-to-install neck cord and a convenient carrying case.

Performance-wise, the ER20XS matches Etymotic’s high-fidelity ER20 developed for musicians. With identical response through 4 kHz and enhanced high-frequency clarity above 4 kHz, these earplugs preserve the richness of music and clarity of speech—just quieter—with a 20-dB equal sound reduction across the spectrum of hearing.

BENEFITS

  • Reduces risk of hearing damage for many noisy occupations as well as noisy venues, such as airshows, parades, athletic events and motor sports.
  • Enhances the music experience for audiences while protecting hearing.
  • Allows musicians to hear their own instrument and their blend with others.

CHOOSING YOUR SIZE

All ears are different. It is impossible to predict the size of an ear canal by the appearance of the outer ear, or by a person’s physical size, age or gender. Two sizes of ER20 Plugs fit almost 100% of ear canals. Recent studies of both fit and seal, conducted at Etymotic Research and an independent lab, showed that the smaller of the two sizes fits the majority of ears and is now designated as standard fit.

ADJUSTING TO ETYMOTIC EARPLUGS

A little time may be required to acclimate to these earplugs. Many musicians report that they hear their own instruments better, as well as the balance with those around them.

Insert the plug by grasping the end cap and inserting the eartip until the largest flange is sealed in the ear canal entrance. To ease insertion, moisten the plug and pull the ear outward and upward. Earplugs must be inserted correctly for optimal effectiveness. To remove, use a slow twisting motion.

WHEN TO REPLACE

ER20 Plugs are reusable, but with repeated use, the eartips may lose elasticity. For best performance and retention, if you use your constantly, replace them every 3-6 months.

CLEANING

  • Do not take earplugs apart.
  • Clean after each use.
  • Wipe clean with a damp cloth as needed.
  • Do not immerse earplugs in water.
  • Do not clean with harsh chemicals.
  • Alcohol is not recommended.

Noise Reduction FAQs

Understanding Noise Reduction Ratings for Etymotic ER20 Earplugs

We know that protecting your hearing is crucial, and we want to ensure you have all the information you need about our Etymotic ER20 earplugs. You might notice a difference between our claim of a 20dB noise reduction and the Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) listed on the packaging. Let’s clarify this for you.

What is NRR? The Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) is a standardized measure that indicates the minimum level of noise reduction you can expect from a hearing protection device in a “worst-case” scenario. It’s designed to give users a baseline expectation of the least amount of attenuation (protection) they might receive.

Why the Discrepancy? While the NRR provides a conservative estimate, extensive testing and real-world data show that the typical amount of noise reduction achieved with our ER20 earplugs is around 20dB. This higher level of attenuation reflects the performance most users will experience in everyday use.

Transparency Matters We understand this discrepancy can be confusing, so we want to be transparent. You’ll find the official NRR rating on our packaging and user manuals. Our goal is to provide you with accurate information to make informed decisions about your hearing protection.

does what I hoped for

Going to events with excessively loud bands they bring sound to acceptable level, but voices come through, allowing for conversation, which wasn't possible with foam earplugs.

Decent fit. Not so sure about sound clarity

The triple flange design provides a good fit. For me, it seems to work best if I insert them and then just pull them very slighlty back. They do block sound. I am not so sure the sound clarity is true/flat. They seem to just reduce everything. The 13 db reduction is ok. A bit more would be appreciated, understanding that might impact clarity even more. I will probably use these mainly for yard and woodworking - not sure about music.

These are great.

The ER-20XS are great earplugs and they arrived just like I expected. They sound beautifully, and I can adjust the volume of sound in my ear by moving them outward or inward in my ear. They’re nothing like cheap drugstore earplugs, Etymotic has made another step away from those and in the opposite direction: toward best fidelity.

Adequate Protection?

Plugs fit well in my ears and remained somewhat comfortable for about three hours of concert level noise. I'm not sure they truely reduced decibel levels as advertised. My ears felt like they were over exposed to noise and ear ringing increased after the show. As a result, I don't have confidence that these plugs actually reduce decibel levels to safe levels. I'll continue to wear mine to mow the lawn, and look further for a product that I feel is adequately protecting my hearing. I'm glad to read that these plugs are working for others because they are inexpensive and rather comfortable to wear.
