Quick Overview

The Etymotic Music Pro Elite®  Rechargeable Musicians Earplugs with Active Hearing Protection is the latest in advanced hearing protection technology. Designed for Musicians who want to hear naturally but need protection when hearing is at risk. Using active technology that constantly evaluates incoming sound the Music Pro Elite®  gives you two modes of operation. The Low mode gives you transparent pass-through audio under 90db, with compression beginning at 60db. When the 90db threshold is passed it gives you 15db of attenuation for material above that level with a super-fast attack and release with the effect of only attenuating that sound. High Mode provides 9 dB of attenuation for loud sounds and 6 dB of gain (amplification) for soft sounds.

Description

The Etymotic Music Pro Elite Rechargeable Active Hearing protection is the latest in advanced hearing protection technology. Designed for Musicians who want to hear naturally but need protection when hearing is at risk. Using active technology that constantly evaluates incoming sound the Music Pro Elite gives you two modes of operation. The Low mode gives you transparent pass-through audio under 90db. When the 90db threshold is passed it gives you 15db of attenuation for material above that level with a super-fast attack and release with the effect of only attenuating that sound. If it’s a quick snare hit, you will hear the natural sound of everything else except that the snare, which will be attenuated as briefly as it happens and then levels go back to normal. If it’s a steady guitar amplifier sound over 90db the sound will be attenuated as long as it is present. In High mode you get 6db of natural level gain under 90db with 9db of attenuation over 90db. The battery life is unprecedented in that out of a single charge on the ear buds you get 16-20 hours of use and an extra15+ charges out of the case itself. The Etymotic Music Pro Elite is a real revolution in hearing protection for musicians.

Room for improvement

Voices sound like they’re speaking through a kazoo or a vibrating piece of film. General electronic distortion is common. Sometimes there is a strange oscillation between left and right ears, around 5 cycles per second or so, especially with sounds that are loud, but not too loud. Background hiss is noticeable when sound is not loud (this is the case with all active noice cancelling earplugs or headphones, so no surprise here).

These are my top pick for musicals, which have a very wide dynamic range.

For concerts, I’m on the fence between the Bose QuietComfort 20 and the Music Pro Elite. The Bose provide smooth and even reduction of volume with no distortion, but they cancel out almost all of the low frequencies. The Music Pro Elite don’t cancel out much of the low frequencies at all, but make music sound distorted.

I think for concerts, instead of only trying to reduce loud sounds, it would be better to have consistent sound reduction, similar to the way the Bose QuietComfort headphones work, except a constant reduction across all frequencies instead of a bias towards cancelling out all low frequencies.

Overall, there is a lot of room for improvement.

Gave band back to my daughter

My daughter suffers from a pain condition called geniculate neuralgia. She has constant ear pain that is made worse by triggers like loud sounds. She plays in her high school band and we thought she was going to have to give it up but this product has been the one thing that allows her to hear what she needs to and dampens the extreme levels so she doesn’t get triggered. We are so excited to find a product that does this! I hope my review possibly sends others that deal with facial pain conditions to this site for help with sound triggers. She finds these easy to use, comfortable, and discrete.

Great Hearing Protection

I am a life long musician and Instrumental Music Teacher. I am constantly exposed to volume levels that are potentially unsafe. While there are no perfect solutions for hearing protection, these Music Pro Elites are the best I have used. I use IEM's on stage (Etymotic) and have used different passive hearing protectors with different filters. These are by far my favorite. I use them with the 6db boost in rehearsals so that I can hear conversation without having to take them out. In a live music setting, I use the low mode and they work great. I highly recommend these Music Pro Elites.

Great sound and dampening of very loud sounds

I play in an orchestra and am in front of the trombones in one orchestra and in front of the percussion in another orchestra. These hearing protectors reproduce sound very well, so you can hear yourself play and hear others normally, while dampening the really loud sounds that might damage your hearing. The only difference from normal for me is that the sound of crinkling papers and turning pages is louder than normal, but you quickly get used to that. I would recommend these to any musician who needs to protect their hearing, while being able to hear sounds of normal volume. I used the protectors for 3 hours and they were at 70% charge after the session and they were quickly recharged by the case. The case still showed 100% charge remaining after charging the hearing protectors from 70%-100%.

Great for non-musicians too

I’m not a musician any more. Now I interview people, sometimes they are very sad and very soft. When my allergies are riled up, even with multiple allergy medications, my hearing is impacted. These ear buds make help me hear the speech more clearly. The effect is subtle but very meaningful. I -love- these!
