Our ears don’t all hear sound the same way. Age, ear shape, and hearing damage can influence how we perceive music. That’s why Etymotic gives you the ability to customize your ER series earphones with a variety of dampers. Each damper/filter changes the acoustic resistance inside the earphone, subtly shaping the sound you hear. The result is a personal listening experience that’s tailored to you.
This set includes a filter removal tool and 5 damper types, each with its own sound signature:
• Green (1500 Ohms – Accurate) The most neutral option. Provides precise, accurate sound reproduction true to the original recording. Perfect for critical listeners and reference use.
• Orange (3300 Ohms – Warmer) Adds warmth by slightly softening higher frequencies, creating a smoother, more relaxed listening experience. Ideal for long sessions or those who prefer a gentler tonal balance.
• Red (2200 Ohms – Accuracy + Warmth) Balances the detail of the Green damper with the warmth of the Orange. Great for listeners who want clarity without straying into brightness.
• White (680 Ohms – Increased Detail) Emphasizes detail by slightly lifting higher frequencies. Brings out subtle textures and nuances, making instruments and vocals sound more immediate.
• Brown (1000 Ohms – Detail & Accuracy) A balanced option that highlights both precision and clarity. It delivers accurate sound reproduction while adding just enough detail to bring out subtle nuances, making it a versatile choice for listeners who want the best of both worlds.
Why should you change your dampers?
Your earphones don’t have to sound the same forever. By swapping dampers, you can tailor your ER series earphones to match your mood, music, or hearing changes. Whether you want precise accuracy, more warmth, or added detail, these filters give you the flexibility to control your sound.
When to replace: If the volume begins to drop noticeably, or if filters become clogged with earwax or debris, it’s time to switch them out.

Good to have options
When I first read about these, I suspected snake oil or maybe the placebo effect, but they actually work as advertised. Moving between colors next to each other, say white to brown, may not make a noticeable difference, but changing from white to orange makes a very big difference. If nothing else, you can tailor your earphones to something you will enjoy more. It’s great to have options.

Wonderful little kit
When the sound gets blocked up you just use this little kit to replace the little tubes. It is very simple to do with the tool included. Great little kit. They give an abundance of the little tubes.

Filter kit
Using the red and orange filters did not affect the midrange or upper frequencies at all, and did give a bit more firmness in the lower frequencies. Very good.

My move to the white filter was a great move
With my high frequency hearing loss, taking out the native green filters supplied with my ER4s and replacing them with the white filters gave me more detail about instruments and voices and a greater sense of space around the performers. Well worth the $39!
